Vintage Notes

Growing Season

The 2021 growing season in the Barossa Valley was characterized by cooler than average temperatures and above-average rainfall. Winter and spring saw good rainfall, replenishing soil moisture and setting up the vines for a strong start. Summer was mild with few heat spikes, allowing for gradual and even ripening of the grapes. These conditions led to a later than usual harvest, with picking dates extending into April for some vineyards. The extended hang time resulted in grapes with intense flavor development, good natural acidity, and fine tannin structures, promising a vintage of exceptional quality and balance.

Vineyard

The grapes were harvested from the low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers in the north-western Barossa districts of Moppa. These two long term partners of Pirathon's are rich with history and produce some of the finest Shiraz in the world.

Winemaking

Each vineyard was harvested at optimal maturity. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After 7-12 days on skins the fermented grapes were pressed with a traditional press. The wines were then filled to new and seasoned French oak and Hungarian hogshead for maturation for eighteen months before each lot of wine was racked from the barrel and carefully blended. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyard in the bottle.
