Benchmark Clare Valley Shiraz, medium to full body with blueberry, raspberry, and subtle spice notes.
GCV White Hut is named after a small sub region of the Clare Valley located just North of the Clare Township. With a high altitude of over 400m above sea level, consisting of undulating valleys and hills the region is well known for producing grapes of the highest quality. Enjoyable in its youth but carefully cellared will continue to evolve over the next 10 years.
A well-made grippy young wine that is almost black in colour and smelling a little like a fruitcake with blackcurrant notes. The palate is intense with varietal fruit flavours”

Matured for 18 months in oak, 10% American, the balance French (10% new). Licorice, cloves, blackberries and Christmas spice. This is silken and concentrated, moving towards dense; the oak should be more obvious than it is. Instead, it serves to cradle the fruit and usher it through the long finish. Very smart wine, here. There is a floral edge to beautifully concentrated plum and black cherry on the nose with oak providing an embellishment of spice that sits behind the fruit. The palate is generous, but balanced, there is a suppleness of dark berry fruits and a sheath of vanillin spice that is held in check by lines of tannin that take on both savoury impact and a touch of dark chocolate. The finish has such purity of fruit.
4.5 stars - The Wine Writer
Ripe red and black plum, and spice on the nose with a juicy dark fruited palate. Fine grained tannins and a spice filled finish. Perfect with roast dinners or cottage pie on a winter’s day.

Bright red in colour. The nose is aromatic, offering blueberry and floral notes in the violet spectrum, with some spice and clove hints indicating French oak influence. On the palate, this silky and youthful wine showcases the hallmark Clare Valley regional characters. Fruit flavours are reminiscent of raspberry coulis, blueberry, and red licorice. The palate weight is generous but not heavy, with a moreish and succulent acidity leading to a long, lingering finish. This wine will develop and reward cellaring over the medium term.

Growing Season
The 2020 growing season required a deft hand in managing the vines. The winter season provided well below average rainfall, followed by a windy spring that caused low fruit set and resulting low yields. The benefit of this was with the dryer conditions the vines found a natural balance of smaller canopy size suitable for the low yields limiting vine stress. Whilst December was particularly hot the key ripening period of January and February had moderate temperatures which allowed us to pick the grapes with good acidity, flavour and freshness. A 20mm rain event on February 1 was a welcome relief and provided a final drink for the vines before harvest started.
Winemaking
The grapes for this wine were harvested between February 25 and March 3. Following fermentation, the wine underwent oak maturation for 17 months in 18% new French oak Hogsheads, with the balance in seasoned American and French Oak hogsheads.
