Growing Season

The 2020 growing season presented challenges, with the 2019 calendar year being the driest on record for the Nuriootpa weather station. Despite dry conditions in spring and early summer, and heat waves in November and December, temperatures moderated in January. The harvest months of February and March saw maximum temperatures around 35°C, with a significant rain event on February 1 providing over 20 mm of welcome rain. While yields were low, the cooler harvest temperatures allowed for good flavour development.

Vineyard

The grapes were harvested from the low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers in the Greenock and Marananga sub-regions of the Barossa Valley. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend.

Winemaking

Each vineyard was harvested at optimum maturity between March 5 and March 24. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After fermentation, the wine was pressed and then filled to seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for maturation for 15 months before each lot of wine was racked from the barrel and carefully blended. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyards in the bottle.
